marco mal loprieno

marco 'mal' loprieno was born in pisa (italy) in 1957. he has been living and working in brussels (belgium) for 20 years. always passionate about improvised music and its social implications mal plays saxophones, flutes and clarinets but also toys and electronics. completely self-taught on music he has studied saxophone with the late free-jazz musician noah howard. marco founded and runs in brussels, along with pat lugo, the cultural association ex-i-t (experimental international transit). ex-i-t holds regular concerts and performances of improvised music.
marco is a member of the brussels-based INaudible collective where he also served as president in 2002-3. he regularly participated in the sons libérés festival organized by INaudible in brussels. he founded several groups, the most recent being THE FLAMES! along with jan pillaert (tuba) and kostas tatsakis (drums).
In 2012 he founded with pat lugo the cultural association memento mari dedicated to raising awareness through improvised music and performance art on the drama of migrants trying to reach europe. In 2012 he composed the suite berluscophonia, a basis for improvisation using speeches of silvio b. berluscophonia was performed on several occasions in belgium and italy. in september 2014 he participated with the memento mari quartet (mal, pat lugo, guy strale and christian vasseur) to the event 'lampedusa in festival' on the island of lampedusa.
